How Do You Keep a Small Church Going During COVID-19?

For more than 50 years as a Christian and 40 years as a pastor, my week reaches crescendo with the church gathering. Together—singing, fellowshiping, praying, hearing of God’s faithfulness, encouraging fellow believers, proclaiming God’s Word—is normal every week. It’s an anticipated gift from the Lord. But this time last year, what I love so dearly got ripped away. Due to four months of intensive chemotherapy, my oncologist mandated: stay in isolation. Four months! Never a Better Time for Family Prayer

A looming pandemic feels invisible to most of us. There’s danger out there—lurking on grocery-store carts and wrapped in friendly hugs—but we can’t see it with our eyes. We can wash our hands while singing “Happy Birthday,” but we can’t be sure we rinsed away every germ. We can wipe down the subway seat, but we don’t know which surfaces we overlooked. We can stay home, but the virus may have already moved in. It’s a great time to pray. As families are stuck at home, we have an opportunity to together take up the largely invisible, outwardly unremarkable tool of prayer. Andando sobre a água

Durante um inverno especialmente frio, aventurei-me até o Lago Michigan, o quinto maior lago do mundo, para vê-lo congelado. Agasalhada, na praia onde normalmente gosto de tomar sol, a vista era de tirar o fôlego. A água tinha congelado em ondas, criando uma obra de arte em gelo. Como a água estava solidamente congelada próxima à margem, tive a oportunidade de “andar sobre a água”. Mesmo sabendo que o gelo estava denso o suficiente para suportar o meu peso, dei os primeiros passos com cuidado. Tinha medo que o gelo quebrasse. Enquanto explorava aquele terreno desconhecido, só conseguia pensar em Jesus chamando Pedro a sair do barco no mar da Galileia. Por Bruno Ribeiro Nascimento* Recentemente a Associação Brasileira de Cristãos na Ciência (ABC²) publicou um livro maravilhoso chamado “Capitalismo e Progresso” (1), do economista e filósofo holandês Bob Goudzwaard. Na obra, Goudzwaard procura fazer um diagnóstico da sociedade ocidental, analisando aquele que é o grande ídolo do nosso tempo: a busca pelo progresso. Independente das pessoas serem liberais ou socialistas, conservadoras ou nacionalistas, reacionárias ou anarquistas, de esquerda ou de direita, todas elas, de alguma forma, possuem uma confiança de que o amanhã será melhor que o hoje.
